UCAS 2024 – England’s university application system. Education in the UK

tanie uniwersytety w anglii

Studying in the UK has for years attracted young Poles dreaming of an education at prestigious universities. British universities are valued for their high level of education, modern approach to learning and wide range of faculties, making them a popular choice among Polish high school graduates. To start studying in the UK, a key step is to apply through the UCAS system, which allows candidates to apply for a place at universities across the UK. This process differs from the recruitment process for Polish universities, which is worth knowing exactly what you need to know to fulfil your educational dreams.

What is the UCAS portal?

UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, is a central organisation operating across the UK whose main task is to coordinate the application process for higher education. UCAS plays a key role in connecting applicants with universities and other educational institutions in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each year, hundreds of thousands of people use the system to apply for undergraduate and foundation year programmes.

The UCAS system is a tool that significantly simplifies the application process, making it structured and easier for both applicants and universities. When applying to study in the UK, UCAS becomes central to the entire process – from choosing a course of study and UK universities to monitoring the status of applications and receiving offers from universities.

This allows students to manage their application in one place, which saves time and avoids the errors of having to submit documents to multiple institutions separately.

Is UCAS used at all universities in the UK?

UCAS is the most widely used undergraduate admissions system in the UK, serving more than 360 colleges and universities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Although most universities use this platform, not all programmes and degree courses are available through UCAS. For example, applications for some part-time degree programmes, such as nursing at Cardiff University, have to be made directly to the university, outside of the UCAS system. Similarly, applicants to masters or doctoral (postgraduate) programmes must apply directly to the universities of their choice. However, UCAS remains the most common and popular tool for undergraduate applicants.

How do I use the UCAS portal? How does registration for courses on the UCAS system work?

Registering with the UCAS application is a simple and intuitive process to apply to study in the UK. The first step is to create an account at ucas.com. When registering, the applicant needs to enter their basic details, such as name, email address and contact details. Once you have completed your registration, the system will automatically generate your individual UCAS log in – a ten-digit code that you will need to log in and monitor the status of your application.

Application limit and single recruitment system

A maximum of five applications can be made through UCAS. It is important to remember that each application counts as a separate application, even if it is for different courses at the same university. This restriction means that the choice of courses and universities must be well thought out.

One of the biggest advantages of the UCAS system is that the application process is standardised across the UK. This means that an applicant does not have to separately check the recruitment deadlines at different universities – for most courses (with the exception of medical studies, for example) the deadlines for applying and sending documents are the same. This facilitates organisation and avoids chaos in the application process.

Uploading documents and monitoring applications

Once you have completed your registration with UCAS, you can upload all the necessary documents, such as your exam results or a letter of motivation (Personal Statement). The system also allows you to track the progress of your application – from submitting your application to receiving an offer from the university. With UCAS, the whole process becomes much more transparent and easier to manage.

Where can I find university offers from the UK?

Applying to study in the UK starts with creating an account on the UCAS recruitment platform. The next step is to choose a university and the course you intend to study. You can find out about the educational offerings of UK universities on their official websites. In addition, take advantage of the open days organised by the universities – many of them, such as Cambridge, now also offer virtual tours.

What can a university respond to an application to study in England?

When you apply to study in the UK, universities can respond to your application with one of three decisions:

  1. Unconditional Offer – or unconditional offer of admission. A candidate receives such an offer when he or she has already provided all the necessary examination results, such as a high school diploma and a language test (usually IELTS). If the applicant meets the university’s requirements, the offer of admission requires no further conditions – the only step is to confirm the applicant’s willingness to start studying.
  2. Conditional Offer – this is a conditional offer. It means that the applicant still has to fulfil certain conditions, for example passing the baccalaureate or a language exam at a certain level. The university specifies the points or percentage thresholds that must be achieved. If the applicant meets these requirements, the results are sent to the university, which then confirms admission.
  3. Unsuccessful – rejection of the application. This means that the applicant does not meet the admission criteria of the university in question or that their application has not been completed correctly.

If a candidate receives more than one conditional offer, he or she has the option to choose Firm choice – this is the main choice, i.e. the university he or she most wants to get into. In addition, he or she can choose Insurance choice, which is the reserve option. Insurance choice should include a university with slightly lower requirements in case the main choice cannot be met.

What are the UCAS fees?

For applicants, the application fee is £27.50 for those applying for 2024, rising to £28.50 for 2025 . Up to six courses can be applied for within this fee.

Furthermore, in addition to the standard application fee, assessment fees may also be required, which vary depending on the course and conservatoire chosen. Most of these fees are charged directly by UCAS. Costs can vary, so it is worth checking the university websites for details.
